Department of Biological Sciences & Biotechnology

Harnessing the Power of Life for Innovation and Sustainability

The Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology was established in 2008 as one of the four pioneer Departments that make up the College of Pure and Applied Sciences of CALEB University, Lagos. The Department had initial approval to run three Bachelor Degree programmes viz:

  • Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology,
  • Plant Science and Biotechnology and
  • Zoology and Aquaculture.

However, students' subscription has been for Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology.

The Department started with initial student enrolment of nine (9) in Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology program only. From this humble beginning, there has been an increased enrolment, and has produced thirteen (13) sets of graduates from 2012 to 2024.

The Department has modern and standard laboratory facilities for Biology, Microbiology and Biotechnology programs.
The Department started it's Post Graduate Diploma Program in 2022 and currently runs MSc. and PhD in Microbiology.

Vision: To be a leading and a dynamic Department, providing distinctly relevant basic and applied biological science education which empowers its graduates to contribute efficiently and effectively to the advancement of the frontiers of knowledge of science and its applications in solving environmental, medica, food and genomics problems.
Mission: To facilitate the production of graduates who can effectively solve modern microbial problems and undertake latest research geared at making significant contributions in their specialty.

  • Key Focus Areas: Molecular Biology & Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, Environmental Biotechnology, Plant & Animal Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Genomics.
  • Distinctive Edge: A strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory work in modern biotech labs, research projects addressing local and global challenges (e.g., food security, disease), and an interdisciplinary approach connecting biology with technology and ethics.
  • Career Pathways: Biomedical Research, Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industries, Agricultural Science, Environmental Consulting, Forensic Science, Public Health, and further studies in Medicine or specialized research

Join us to decode life's processes and engineer a healthier, more sustainable future.
