The Department of Criminology and Security Studies was established in the 2016/2017 academic session, driven by a mission to be among the top departments in Africa and globally. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, the Department aims to develop graduates who possess a profound knowledge of Criminology and are prepared to lead and excel in serving society.

The Department's curriculum and the dedication of its staff form the foundation upon which this vision is built. Since its inception, the Department has made notable strides, including achieving full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2019 and 2024, a testament to its adherence to high academic standards.
Since the first cohort graduated, the Department has successfully graduated five sets of students, with several graduates achieving first-class honours. This accomplishment highlights the Department's commitment to fostering academic excellence and preparing its students to become leaders and authorities in Criminology and Security Studies.

Dr Onyekachi E. Nnabuihe
HODOnyekachi E. Nnabuihe is an Associate Professor of peace, conflict, security and development studies and Ag. Head, Department of Criminology, Security, Peace and Conflict Studies.
He holds a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Ibadan, a Postgraduate Diploma in Federalism, Decentralization and Conflict Resolution from the Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Dr Nnabuihe is a fellow, Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship, University of Pretoria; fellow, African Studies Centre, Leiden University; Catalyst fellow, Centre for African Studies, University of Edinburgh; fellow, Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI), Brown University.
He has held some research grants and has published in reputable outlets both locally and internationally. His research interest is on peace, conflict, security and development studies, migration and border security, inter-group relations, resource and identity conflicts as well as governance and institutions.
He has ongoing researches focusing on social movements, reflexivity and knowledge production, non-flight dynamics in conflict, political competitions and violence, the military and militarization of society, armed gangs; banditry.
